  • Gina Lemke was named director of pharmacy at St. Luke’s and is responsible for St. Luke’s Hospital Pharmacy, Wilderness Tele-Pharmacy Services, Northland Pharmacy and St. Luke’s Infusion Therapy Pharmacy.

    Before her appointment, Lemke was manager of pharmacy operation at St. Luke’s and also worked as director of pharmacy for Lake View Hospital in Two Harbors. Before moving to Duluth, she worked in pharmacies in Chicago and the Twin Cities.

    Lemke received her doctorate of pharmacy from the University of Minnesota and completed an ASHP-accredited pharmacy practice residency at the University of Illinois-Chicago. She also serves as a clinical instructor and preceptor for the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy.

    AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS

  • Construction Specifications Institute Twin Ports chapter presented the following community awards during their annual dinner party at the Kitchi Gammi Club.

    Builders Commonwealth Inc. received the organization’s Community Service Award for “exhaustive efforts by an extreme team for an extreme dream in designing, coordinating and executing the construction of a ‘life-changing’ new home for the Huber family” and their ability to garner a communitywide show-of-force in completing this fast-track project.”

    Alessandro Giuliani received the Visionary Award, which read: “For your forward-thinking and innovative approach of Clyde Iron Works development that truly provides a new vision and excitement for the region while keeping the historic value of this site.”

    Additional awards were presented to the following CSI members: Gary Tridgell, education certificate of merit; Robert Wolters, certificate of appreciation; Robert Saumur, FCSI, presidential citation; and William Scalzo, education certificate of merit.

  • Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics in Duluth was awarded the Excellence Award for Operations by the management of its parent company, Hanger Orthopedic Group. The award recognizes Hanger centers, which provide superior clinical care, reliable customer service and have attained or sustained outstanding operating results. The award is presented annually to fewer than 3 percent of the company’s more than 670 patient-care centers across the U.S.

    Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics is located at 1901 South St. in Duluth and the staff is made up of James L’Allier, certified prosthetist, practice manager; Erin O’Hearn-L’Allier, certified orthotist, director of orthotics; Sandy Kemp, senior office administrator; Kevin Kuno, certified pedorthist; Penny Larsen, office administrator; and Paul Antila, technician.

    CERTIFICATIONS AND ACCREDITATIONS

  • The following people earned certification as human resource generalists from the Center for Continuing Education/ Extension at UWS: Susan Julio, Cliffs Natural Resources, Hermantown; and Heather Willcoxon, Health Care Clinic, Superior.

    Participants complete eight full-day workshops (48 hours of training), which provide a base of knowledge about current law and practices, including personnel issues, human resource management and labor-management relations.

    ELECTIONS

  • Jake Benson, publisher of the Proctor Journal, was elected president of the Minnesota Newspaper Association during the annual meeting of the association. He is the 129th president of the 143-year-old association representing more than 360 weekly and daily newspapers.

    Benson is a Proctor native and started his newspaper career at age 13 as a printer devil working with hot metal and moveable wooden type. Though high school he wrote for the school paper as well as for the Proctor Journal. After three years in the Army as a photojournalist he joined the Journal staff and served as an advertising representative, salesman, reporter and editor before becoming publisher. In 1998 he purchased the Floodwood Forum.

    He has served on the MNA member services committee, chaired the journalism education committee and finance committee and is the board’s legislative liaison. He is also a graduate of the Blandin Foundation Community Leadership Program.

    NEW BUSINESS

  • HFCU Mortgage Solutions opened in January with offices in both Hermantown Federal Credit Union locations (Lavaque Road in Hermantown and London Road in Duluth) as well as an off-site branch at 1330 E. Superior St. in Duluth.

    Mary Rich, Gloria Allan and Kelly Sieger are mortgage loan officers with the company and have more than 57 years of combined local experience.

    HFCU Mortgage Solutions is a full-service mortgage provider offering conventional, FHA, 203K Renovation, VA and USDA mortgage programs. HFCU is an equal housing lender.

  • Luke Chiropractic and Wellness was recently opened in the Trade and Commerce Marketplace building at Hammond Avenue and Broadway Street in Superior. The business is owned by Dr. Greg Luke and his wife, Patti Luke, who is the office manager. Terri Rozell works at the front desk and processes billing.

    Dr. Luke has practiced chiropractic medicine for more than 20 years, most recently at Lake Superior Chiropractic. He has certification in spinal-care trauma and has much experience with injuries from auto or work accidents. Patients of all ages — from infants to seniors — are welcome.

    RELOCATION/OPEN HOUSE

  • The law office of Terri Port has relocated to Suite 2 of 1201 Tall Pine Lane in Cloquet. Terri Port Wright practices criminal, family and Chips law in northern Minnesota. She is a 1976 graduate of Cloquet High School and a graduate of William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul. She will take over the offices previously occupied by Rex Laaksonen, who is retiring.

    Laaksonen is a Cloquet native who has more than 30 years of legal experience working in Carlton County. His office has been in Cloquet for the duration of his career. He practiced family law and handled civil and criminal matters, as well as estate planning.

    A relocation and retirement open house/party will be held from 2:30-5:30 p.m. Friday at the new location. The event includes dessert and coffee.

    FORMER RESIDENTS

  • Michael A. Usan, the son of Arthur and Lillian Usan of Duluth, was appointed to the 17th Judicial Circuit Court in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., by Florida Gov. Charlie Crist. Usan, 47, has been a sole practitioner since 1999. He previously practiced privately with Murawski and Usan from 1994-99 and with Barrett and Usan from 1993-94. Between 1992 and 1993, Usan served as an assistant state attorney in the 17th Judicial Circuit Court. Additionally, from 1988-92 Usan served as a judge advocate general in the U.S. Air Force.

    He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota and a law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law in Winston-Salem, N.C.

  • Knudson, Torvinen, Jones and Kirk law firm in Superior announced Johanna R. Kirk was named a new partner/ shareholder.

    Kirk graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in legal studies and from Hamline School of Law in St. Paul in 2006 with her juris doctor.

    She started working at the firm in 2006 and practices many areas of law, including estate planning, probate, real estate, employment issues, personal injury, family law and more.

  • Jiffy Jeff’s Lost Oldies show moved from KQDS when they switched to a sports format and now can be heard on WMOZ 106.9 and WKLK 1230 AM from 9 a.m. to noon. The shows now cover up to Two Harbors, over to Minong and down to Hinckley.
